This study investigates the use of fr. je pense, esp. pienso yo y pt. penso eu and asks whether this marker can really be considered a discourse marker. Especially in those cases where the marker has a retroactive function, the notion of cognitive particle seems more appropriate. The analysis is going to reveal that its use fulfils different functions such as cognitive particle, pragmatic marker, stance marker or attenuator. SpanishEn este estudio se investigará el uso de fr. je pense, esp. pienso yo y pt. penso eu, planteando la pregunta si estos predicados pueden ser considerados realmente marcadores de discurso. Pues, mostraremos que en los casos donde el marcador tiene un efecto retroactivo al locutor, el término de partícula cognitiva parece ser el más adecuado. En otros casos cumplen las funciones de marcador pragmático, marcador de la actitud del hablante o marcador atenuante.
